About the role
The incumbent will provide direct clinical and psychosocial support interventions for individuals experiencing distress, trauma‑related symptoms, severe emotional difficulties, or psychosocial vulnerabilities linked to displacement, prolonged transit, deportation, detention, family separation, violence, or uncertainty about return and reintegration. This national officer position is based in Georgetown, Guyana.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver individual counselling, supportive psychotherapy, crisis intervention and psychosocial assessments to migrants, returnees and other vulnerable persons.
- Conduct structured MHPSS assessments, identify cases requiring specialised mental‑health referral and coordinate with the MHPSS Regional Specialist.
- Provide psychosocial follow‑up for high‑risk cases, including severe distress, suicide risk and trauma‑related symptoms.
- Facilitate group counselling, psycho‑education, stress‑management sessions and support groups.
- Assist in referral processes to psychiatric, medical, protection or specialised services and participate in suicide‑prevention procedures.
- Maintain confidential case files, ensure accurate documentation and support activity tracking, reporting and monitoring.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Psychology, Psychology, Counselling Psychology or a related mental‑health field (or two years relevant experience); a Master’s degree is also acceptable.
- Professional registration or licence to practice psychology is an advantage.
- Experience delivering direct psychological services in humanitarian, migration, displacement or low‑resource settings.
- Experience supporting individuals affected by trauma, violence, displacement or severe distress, and working with vulnerable groups such as migrants, women, youth and survivors of violence.
- Experience in humanitarian or emergency contexts is highly desirable.
